Terry Edward BranstadĀ was born on November 17, 1946 in Leland, Iowa, U.S.A. He is an American politician,Ā university administrator, and diplomat serving as theĀ United States Ambassador to ChinaĀ since 2017.

Branstad was born inĀ Leland, Iowa. His father was Edward Arnold Branstad, a farmer; his mother was Rita Branstad’s mother was Jewish, and his father aĀ Norwegian AmericanĀ Lutheran.Ā Branstad was raised Lutheran and later converted to Catholicism.Ā He is a second cousin of DC Circuit Chief Judge and US Supreme Court NomineeĀ Merrick Garland.

Branstad received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from theĀ University of IowaĀ in 1969 and a Juris Doctor fromĀ Drake University Law SchoolĀ in 1974.Ā He wasĀ draftedĀ after college and served in theĀ United States ArmyĀ from 1969 to 1971 as aĀ military policemanĀ in the 503rd Military Police Battalion atĀ Fort Bragg.Ā He was awarded theĀ Army Commendation MedalĀ for meritorious service; he once recalled that he arrested actressĀ Jane FondaĀ for coming onto post atĀ Arlington National Cemetery, where she was planning to attend anĀ antiwar protest.

A member of theĀ Republican Party, he previously served asĀ governor of Iowa. Branstad also served three terms in theĀ Iowa House of RepresentativesĀ from 1973 to 1979.

Branstad served as the 39thĀ governor of IowaĀ from 1983 to 1999. After retiring from politics, he served as President ofĀ Des Moines UniversityĀ from 2003 to 2009. In 2010 he ran for governor again andĀ defeatedĀ incumbentĀ Chet CulverĀ to become the state’s 42nd governor.Ā He was reelected to a sixth term in 2014. In December 2015 he surpassed New York’sĀ George ClintonĀ as the longest-tenured governor in American history, with 8,169 days in office.

In December 2016, Branstad accepted President Donald Trump’s nomination as United States Ambassador to China. He was confirmed and sworn in in May 2017. Upon resigning as governor, Branstad was succeeded by Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds, who became Iowa’s first female governor and went on to win election to the office in 2018. In 2020 Branstad resigned as Ambassador to China to work on Trump’s reelection campaign. On October 4th 2020, Branstad and his family left China to return to the US.
